How the numbers are calculated

Total greenhouse gas saved is based on NSW EPA data, which shows that diverting food waste from landfill to a compliant organics processing facility avoids at least 2.1 tonnes of CO₂-e per tonne of waste, less a conservative processing factor of 0.025 t CO₂-e/t for off-site composting.

Landfill space saved assumes a typical food waste density of 500 kg/m³ (US EPA Volume-to-Weight Conversion Factors). Plastic bags diverted assumes a 30-litre bag size.

Figures are averages; actual outcomes vary by waste composition, processing method, site operations, transport and other factors. ‘Landfill space’ and ‘bags diverted’ are estimates only and not formal regulatory measures.
