FAQs
What type of business would benefit from a BioFeed?
Any site that generates regular food waste and wants to reduce bin collections, odour, and handling: commercial kitchens, fruit & veg shops, clubs & pubs, shopping centres, food processing plants, nursing homes, hospitals, education facilities, and accommodation facilities.
What food waste can go into the Biofeed?
General kitchen food waste: fruit and veg, meat and seafood (without large shells), cooked and uncooked foods, bread, pasta, rice, dairy, and small amounts of sauces and oils that come with normal food preparation. Avoid very hot liquids — let them cool first (as a guide, below ~50 °C).
What cannot go into the Biofeed?
Non-food items and tough or fibrous materials. Do not load metal (cutlery, cans), glass, porcelain/ceramics, rigid plastics or cling film, wooden items, large bones, seafood shells (e.g. oyster, mussel), corn husks, pineapple tops, or lemongrass. These can jam or damage the unit and block downstream lines.
What happens when the tank is full?
The system continuously monitors tank level.
At approximately 75% capacity, the “Tank Full” LED will flash, and an automatic email notification will be sent to the nominated service/collection contact. The unit can still be used at this stage. At approximately 90% capacity, the “Tank Full” LED will remain solid, a second automatic email notification will be sent, and the machine will not operate until the tank has been emptied.Does Biofeed provide training?
Yes. We provide on-site commissioning and operator training, plus a user guide and laminated quick-start sheet. Each unit has a QR code linking to a short how-to video and “what can/can’t go in” signage.
How much food waste can the Biofeed Process in a single cycle?
The bowl capacity is up to 40 litres per load. Most loads process in approximately 30 seconds, depending on the mix and density of the waste. You can run consecutive cycles as required. Biofeeds fitted with an electric bin lifter and either a hopper or an auger feed can run longer and larger cycles, allowing higher throughput for bulk-loading applications.
How much water does a Biofeed use?
Approximately 2–3 litres per cycle. Water use can be tuned by our technicians to suit your site and waste stream.
What are the location and installation requirements for a Biofeed unit?
A level floor with safe access, a 20-amp, three-phase, 5-pin power supply, cold water connection, and space for service access. Holding tanks should be located where pump-out vehicles have access.
Does Biofeed come with a warranty?
Yes — 12-month warranty (terms and conditions apply), with local service support available. Machines are also maintained for the length of the rental contract; however, this does not cover breakdowns caused by misuse.
What happens if cutlery goes into the Biofeed?
The majority of cutlery is made from magnetic materials and, in most cases, will be caught by the magnetic separators in the bowl. If you think cutlery has entered the machine, stop the cycle and remove the cutlery from the magnets at the top of the bowl. If an item is not caught, isolate the unit if needed and remove it safely if visible and reachable. If it’s jammed or not visible, contact our service team for assistance.
Can bones go into the Biofeed?
Small, soft bones (e.g. fish bones, small chicken fragments) are acceptable in moderation. Do not load large or dense bones (e.g. beef/lamb) as they are noisy, slow to process, and may cause damage.
Can chopsticks or wooden cutlery go into the Biofeed?
No. Remove wooden items before loading — they do not process effectively and can damage the unit.
Does the Biofeed smell?
No. The Biofeed processes waste daily, reducing the chance of odour build-up. The sealed holding tank design, combined with regular pump-outs, helps maintain a clean and odour-free environment.
How often does the tank need to be emptied?
Frequency depends on your waste volume. Many sites require a pump-out every 2–4 weeks, while high-volume sites may need weekly service. The 75% and 90% tank-level alerts help schedule pump-outs before the system stops.
Can the Biofeed handle liquids?
Yes, the Biofeed can process liquids present in typical food waste loads. Avoid pouring large volumes of free liquid directly into the bowl, as this can unnecessarily fill the holding tank and reduce efficiency.
Is the Biofeed eligible for rebates or grants?
In many cases, yes. The Biofeed qualifies for NSW EPA Bin Trim rebates for eligible businesses, which can cover up to 50% of the purchase price.
Does the Biofeed meet food waste mandate requirements?
Yes. Biofeed systems are designed for “mandate readiness” in NSW and other states, providing measurable landfill diversion data and operational efficiency for compliance.
Does the Biofeed have data reporting?
Yes. The Biofeed uses a cloud-based data reporting system that records waste volumes and, when applicable, tracks usage by operator or tenant. This data can be accessed remotely, supports compliance reporting, and can be shared with your waste contractor or management team.
What happens during a power outage?
The Biofeed will stop mid-cycle. Once power is restored, the reset button will need to be pressed before the Biofeed can be used as normal.
Does the Biofeed connect to the internet?
Yes. Biofeeds are fitted with SIM cards for remote connectivity, meaning they do not need to be connected to your site’s network. The only exception is if the unit is installed in a location with no mobile reception — in that case, a wired or Wi-Fi connection will be required. Internet connectivity enables automatic email notifications for tank levels, remote diagnostics, and integration with the cloud-based reporting system.
Can the Biofeed process packaging?
No. Remove all packaging (plastic, cardboard, foil) before loading food waste. Packaging can damage the unit and cause downstream blockages.
Can the Biofeed operate outdoors?
Yes, provided it is installed under a roof or weatherproof enclosure and has safe access to power and water.
